The New England summer is still in its prime, but recent high school grads are also anxiously awaiting their first taste of freedom as college orientations beckon new students. Parents are starting to worry about how their child will manage on their own and whether or not they are responsible enough to take care of school work and housework at the same time. If your child is going to be staying on campus and live in a Dorm or another form of university housing, you can feel assured that their possessions will be covered under your current homeowner policy. Laptops, stereos, mini- fridges or a television are just a few examples of what costly belongings your child needs to keep an eye on. Campus thefts are occurring across the board on many campuses so making sure that these items are protected is beneficial to your child and to you as well. However, if your child decides to move off campus their items will no longer be covered under your homeowner policy and we recommend they purchase a renters’ policy. A renter’s policy will not only cover all their personal belongings, but will provide them with personal liability insurance as well. Sending your child off to college is a big event for any family, which is why at Ross we want to make sure that you feel confident knowing your child’s belongings would be covered if anything were to happen away at school.
