A Winter Workout!
Looking for a fun and new way to get your exercise in this Winter? Check out “snowshoeing”, footwear specifically made for walking over the snow. Snowshoes are shoes that distribute the weight of the person over a larger area of ground so that when walking, the person doesn’t sink into the snow. Don’t be overwhelmed by the large size of these shoes, as they appear to be several sizes larger than regular walking shoes. These shoes are believed to have originated in Central Europe over 6,000 years ago from British archaeologist, Jacqui Wood. Today, snowshoes are mainly used for 3 purposes; aerobics and running, recreational walking, and mountaineering through hills and long-distance trips. Western MA even offers its own Saturday Snowshoe Treks. These 10am-12noon excursions take place every Saturday and vary on location. To see a full listing of scheduled snowshoe treks, visit the Hilltown Families Blog, where you’ll be able to view dates and trails based on difficulty before making your first trip out. Snowshoeing is the perfect activity for those who love the outdoors no matter the weather. To learn more about Snowshoeing in your area, check local newspapers and bulletin boards for flyers. For those just looking for a peaceful walk by themselves or with a friend, take a pair of snowshoes and head to a local golf course. Golf courses make great places for a trek on snowshoes. However, first make sure that they don’t prohibit snowshoeing though most don’t.
