Does insurance cover flooding in your basement?

April showers will bring May flowers….. however, don’t let April showers leave you with a flooded basement! Heavy rainfall can cause flooding in basements and many homeowners are asking the question will insurance cover the water damage in my basement? Unfortunately, standard homeowners insurance does not cover damage from flooding, unless you have a specific flood insurance policy. Water that comes into your home from the top down such as a leak in the roof is usually covered. On the other hand, ground water is not covered. Water that comes through the basement floor is considered ground water.

Flood damage is more common than you might think. Even if you live in a low-risk flood area, heavy rain can cause significant flooding. Over a 30-year mortgage, your home has a 26% chance of being damaged by a flood, compared to a 9% chance of fire. You can learn more about floods, your risk of flooding, and the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) at Floodsmart.gov.
