My Love/Hate Relationship With My Smoke Detector

Logically my detector makes me feel safe from harm because I know it will warn me from smoke/fire and that’s why I love it.

However, I equally hate my detector, especially when the low battery signal goes off at 5:00 am.  This happened earlier in the week for me.  This was the one detector that could only be reached via my tall ladder, which of course was located in the basement.  As you might imagine I was pretty agitated when I climbed the ladder (without my glasses mind you) and ripped the battery out of the unit (muttering a few expletives along the way).  Needless to say, I had great difficulty returning back to sleep after the incident.

If that was not traumatic enough, a few days later a 2nd detector started sounding off, this time at 2:00 am – only affirming my assertion that they ONLY go off in the middle of the night.

Does anyone ever wonder why the low battery signal ALWAYS seems to go off ONLY in the middle of the night?  Can’t the manufacturers design a unit that only allows the low battery to activate in daylight?  I hope to live to see the day when this happens – but until that time comes, I guess should listen to the experts and change the batteries when they tell me to.

So, don’t get to the agitated state that I did, and remember to change your batteries when you change your clocks during the spring & fall season.  Remember, the life you save by doing so may be your own or a loved ones.

Oh yeah . . . and another reason to love your smoke detector is because you get a discount on your Massachusetts Homeowner Insurance!
