Relay For Life- Creating more birthdays means more cake!
For the month of June we will work to bring awareness to Relay For Life in Belchertown, an event that Melissa Bail chose for her community focus. The Relay For Life is an organized overnight community fundraising walk for The American Cancer Society. Members of each team take turns walking around the track and the teams camp out around the track. It is a family-friendly environment fun for the entire community!
The American Cancer Society raises money to help all types of cancer; they are fighting for every birthday threatened by every cancer in all communities. The Relay For Life is happening in many towns throughout the country, including Ludlow, Wilbraham, Chicopee and Springfield. We will be focusing on the Relay For Life that will take place in Belchertown on June 20th which Melissa Bail will be participating in.
“Almost all of us have been touched by cancer in some way, so we’ve decided to make a difference by running and raising money in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life event. At Relay for Life events, teams camp out overnight and teams have their team members take turns walking the track throughout the entire event, but our team is made up of crazy running ladies, so we’re going to spend the entire event taking turns RUNNING! Hey, it’s what we do.”
Melissa is participating in this for many reasons as this organization is near and dear to her heart. The main reason is in honor of her father Ralph Jones, who lost his battle to cancer in February of 2009. This is a way for Melissa to honor his memory and raise money for those who are currently battling cancer.
A group of her friends who ran for Mass Dash last year, an event that raises money for the Jimmy Fund, decided they wanted to do something to make a difference again this year. Their team name is called “Will Run for Cake” because more birthdays for people diagnosed with cancer, means more cake! As she mentioned, rather than just walking the track, her team had decided to run it! It is 18 hours straight and at least one member of the team needs to be on the track at all times.
Ross Insurance will be supporting Melissa and donating to her team. We will hold a dress down day and a BBQ on June 18th to encourage Melissa for the Relay For Life event.
