“Run, Fight, and Never Forget”

You might remember a previous blog we did on Momo Morris, a friend of ours that is in the fight of her life against Leukemia. She is still undergoing treatment and is doing very well. We thought we would share with you some of the events that the Morris family is participating in these days to help others in their fight against this horrible disease. Momo and her family embraced fundraising for childhood cancer in a big way. Momo is a very brave, inspiring girl and her family is very active in raising money for children’s cancer research. Momo is an Ambassador for Baystate Children’s Hospital; check out the link to see her life size cutout that has been spotted in Costco and other places around Springfield.

One of the events this year that Momo and her family will be participating in is the “Mass Dash Relay”. The Mass Dash is a 200 mile run though Massachusetts starting July 14th to July 15. This two day relay is a team adventure race, all running for a significant purpose. It will bring together hundreds of runners who are dedicated to raising awareness for their family, friends and neighbors in the fight against cancer. The race is put on by the Jimmy Fund Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, all the fundraising efforts will go to them.

“Since its founding in 1947, the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute has been committed to providing the finest expert and compassionate care to children and adults with cancer while advancing the understanding, diagnosis, treatment, cure and prevention of cancer and related diseases.  For over sixty years, the Jimmy Fund has provided enormous financial support to Dana-Farber in the fight against cancer, helping to save countless lives of those with cancer in our local communities and around the world…”

The race consists of teams of twelve runners; Momos team name is “Morgan’s Cancer Crushers”.  It is beginning at the highest point of Massachusetts; Mount. Greylock. On the race the runners will pass through state parks, forests, colleges, and many historic towns. It will end at the DCR Carson beach in Boston. There will be a BBQ on the beach for the runners and their family members. In the past two years they raised over $200,000 for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Registration and donations are still open for the race.

Another event that Momo and family participated in this year was the “CureSearch Walk”. The CureSearch Walk is different than most cancer fundraising events because the patients, past and present, are an essential part to the event. “Team MOMO” had a fundraising goal of $100.00 and the total raised was $3,545.00! This week Momo, her brother Andrew and their Mom Laura are enjoying a week at Camp Sunshine in Maine. Unfortunately, dad had to work. Camp Sunshine is a retreat for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. A well deserved vacation for the Morris Family.
